Badgers end regular season with draw versus Penn State

Senior Day a hard-fought 1-1 match

MADISON, Wis. – Wisconsin men's soccer played its final home game of the season on Sunday, drawing with conference leading Penn State at McClimon Soccer Complex.

Wisconsin's record moves to 6-4-6, 2-2-4 Big Ten after the evenly played match, with both teams' defenses shining.

The tie by Wisconsin prevented the Nittany Lions from winning the Big Ten outright, but PSU did  clinch a share of the Big Ten Championship with the result.

How It Happened:
Wisconsin was the first team to score. During the 14th minute of the game, Birgir Baldvinsson took a corner looking to find one of his teammates for the shot. Instead, Baldvinsson kick soared into the back of the net for a corner-kick goal, giving the Badgers the 1-0 lead.

Outside of Baldvinsson's goal, the first half was a great battle of defense. Both teams were clearing the ball to the other side of the field and causing throw-ins for the other team. First half shots on goal ended in Wisconsin's favor 2-1.

The second half began the same way, but Penn State started to gain more steam as the half went on. At one point, Wisconsin keeper Nate Crockford made two saves in the span of one minute.

The Nittany Lions broke through in minute 67 though, when a good passing sequence found Van Danielson with a look that was too good for Crockford, tying the game up at one a piece.

Despite good scoring chances from Thomas Raimbault and Ryan Quintos, the Badgers were unable to get the go-ahead goal, ending their regualr season with a tie. With an overall record improvement from last years 6-6-4 overall record.

Straight from the Pitch - Head Coach Neil Jones:
"Great day for our seniors to remember their last regular-season game here at Wisconsin. I thought we did really well in the first half, but Penn State made some good adjustments in the second half, and they got their goal. Probably a deserved tie, at the end of the day, it was a fair result for both teams. Now we move on to conference tournament play and look forward to learning who we play next."

Key Notes:
  • It was senior day at Wisconsin. Prior to the game, five badger players were honored. Ryan Gallagher, Jack Finnegan, Bennett Pauls, and captains Tim Bielic and Maxwell Keenan.
  • Birgir Baldvinsson scored his second goal of the season off a great corner kick. The grad from Iceland also played all 90 minutes this game, it was the 11th game this season where the defender has not been subbed out.
  • Nate Crockford had one of his best games of the season in net. He disrupted many Penn State crosses and corner kicks, while tying his season high in saves with six. His shutout against Ohio State last week nabbed his Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week honors.
Up Next: Wisconsin begins tournament play Friday, Nov. 3. Their matchup, time and location have yet to be determined.
