MADISON, Wis. — Wisconsin wrestler Dean Hamiti has been named as the Big Ten's Co-Wrestler of the Week for Nov. 14, 2023.
Hamiti, a junior from Joliet, Illinois, earned the conference's weekly award after a dominant performance winning the 2023 Michigan State Open title at 165 pounds. This is the first Big Ten weekly honor of his career and first of the season. Hamiti is no stranger to league awards however as the reigning Big Ten Champion in his weight class and also the 2022 Big Ten Freshman of the Year.
Hamiti earned his first tournament title of the season at the Open with a 4-0 record in the men's open competition. Ranked No. 4 in the country, Hamiti opened the event with two back-to-back pins — 2:21 over Tyler Swiderski of Central Michigan and 1:47 over Beau Mantanona of Michigan. In the semifinal match, Hamiti earned a 11-1 major decision over 30th-ranked Cael Carlson (Oklahoma) after starting the bout with a three-point takedown and turning his opponent for a four-point nearfall. Hamiti won the title with a dominant 15-0 shutout tech fall of No. 10 Caleb Fish of Michigan State in which he scored two takedowns, two four-point nearfalls and an escape.
Hamiti joined teammates Eric Barnett (125), Nicolar Rivera (133) and Luke Condon (174) in winning titles at the Open. Read the full recap here.
