MADISON, Wis. — After helping lead the Wisconsin men's basketball team to a title at the 2023 Fort Myers Tip-Off last week, freshman
John Blackwell was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week by the league office on Monday.
The combo guard from Bloomfield Hills, Michigan averaged 10.0 points and 6.5 rebounds per game in the two-game tournament. Blackwell has scored in double figures in four straight games, and five of six games this season.
Blackwell becomes the first Badger to be named Big Ten Freshman of the Week since current teammate
Chucky Hepburn earned the honor back on Dec. 6, 2021.
In the championship game, Blackwell finished with 10 points, a career-high nine rebounds (four offensive boards) and two assists.
Facing No. 24 Virginia, Blackwell tallied 10 points (2-3 3FG) and four rebounds.
Blackwell ranks second in scoring among Big Ten freshmen this season averaging 10.2 points per contest. He leads the Badgers shooting 46.2 percent from 3-point range (6-for-13), while also tops for UW in free throws (21) and free throw attempts (25).
Wisconsin hosts Western Illinois on Monday for a 6 p.m. (CT) game on Big Ten Network. UW then faces No. 3 Marquette at the Kohl Center on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. on FOX.
