GOTHENBURG, Sweden – Wisconsin men's hockey forward Quinn Finley has been named to the 25-man final roster set to represent Team USA at the 2024 International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Junior Championship, USA Hockey announced on Saturday.
The 2024 IIHF World Junior Championship, which brings together the top national under-20 ice hockey teams from around the world, runs from Dec. 26, 2023 through Jan. 5, 2024 in Gothenburg, Sweden.
Finley, a third-round New York Islanders draft pick from Suamico, Wisconsin, currently boasts five goals and seven points through 18 games as a Badger. The freshman has competed internationally for Team USA before, but this marks his first trip to the World Juniors.
The forward making the roster helps extend the streak to eight consecutive years with at least one Badger competing at the World Juniors and the 37th straight event with at least one Badger competitor or staff member taking part in the tournament dating back to 1988.
That includes in 2004, when Team USA won its first gold medal and Badgers Jake Dowell, Jeff Likens and Ryan Suter all skated for the team. That team was also coached by Badger alum Mike Eaves, who was UW head coach at the time.
Team USA boasts five gold medals in the tournament, and three of those victories saw Badgers lead the team as captain (Luke Kunin – 2017; Jake McCabe – 2013; Derek Stepan – 2010).
All-time, 59 (60 including Finley) Badgers have played in the World Junior Championship to date. Most recently, sophomore forward
Charlie Stramel helped Team USA to a bronze medal in the 2023 tournament.
To date, the U.S. National Junior Team has claimed 13 medals, including five gold (2021, 2017, 2013, 2010, 2004), two silver (2019, 1997) and seven bronze medals (2023, 2018, 2016, 2011, 2007, 1992, 1986).
For the 2024 tournament, the United States, Czechia, Norway, Slovakia and Switzerland will form Group B and play at Frölundaborg. Canada, Sweden, Finland, Germany and Austria will compete in Group A, with preliminary-round games taking place at Scandinavium.
All U.S. games will broadcast live on NHL Network, including its tournament opener against Norway on Dec. 26. The gold-medal game takes place on Jan. 5.
