Here’s six more notes to pin:
1. Last Time Out:
Last Time Out: In back-to-back duals on the road on Saturday, Dec. 9, No. 26 Wisconsin wrestling knocked down Rider to earn a 22-16 victory followed by a 26-11 win at Drexel. Read the recap here.
Six Badgers each earned two individual wins in the duals, including Eric Barnett (125 pounds) and Nicolar Rivera (133) securing major decisions in both duals.
Joseph Zargo (149) tallied an upset decision against Rider and a major decision. Zargo earned a key victory of 12th-ranked Quinn Kinner at 149 with a gritty 7-1 decision. Scoreless after the first period, Zargo scored two takedowns and contained Kinner to earn the extra point for riding time.
Dean Hamiti (165) earned a major decision and a tech fall. Max Maylor (184) turned in two gutsy wins with one earned in sudden victory against Rider and a come-from-behind victory against Drexel.
2. 2022 Midlands:
Eric Barnett led UW to a fourth-place finish at the 2022 Midlands after winning title at 125, along with five teammates on the podium.
After leading the team standings in first place through three sessions, UW narrowly dropped down to fourth with 114.5 team points.
Among four Badgers in the finals, Barnett won the team’s lone crown after defeating Arizona State’s Brandon Courtney in a 6-2 decision.
Wisconsin’s Drew Scharenbrock (157), Dean Hamiti (165) and Braxton Amos (197) all finished second in their respective weight classes and first appearances in the Midland finals.
Scharenbrock dropped an 8-0 loss to Northwestern’s Trevor Chumbley. Hamiti lost in a tight 4-3 decision to Princeton’s Quincy Monday. Amos went into multiple overtimes before losing 2-1 to Illinois’ Zac Braunagel, easily the tournament’s longest bout.
3. Tourney Time:
The Midlands Championship will be Wisconsin's second major wrestling tournament of the season, as head coach Chris Bono aims to provide more competitive days of events for the Badgers.
