
Five events to watch: Wisconsin travels to New Mexico and Ripon

Select sprinters compete in New Mexico; throwers travel to Ripon
MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin men's track and field team will be sending select sprint athletes to the New Mexico Collegiate Classic in New Mexico while the throwers will be traveling to Ripon, Wisconsin, for the Red Hawk Invitational. Events at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic will begin on Friday at 1:30 p.m. and on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. Events at the Red Hawk Invitational begin at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday.
Here are the five events to watch this weekend:
1. BADGERS LEAD THE REGION: Wisconsin is ranked first in the USTFCCCA in the Great Lakes Region, seeded ahead of Big Ten foes No.2 Indiana, No.4 Ohio State, and No.5 Michigan. Last year, Wisconsin was second according to the USTFCCCA in the Great Lakes Region and wrapped up their season in 15th nationally.
2. SPRINT SQUAD: Competing in New Mexico this weekend is senior Lawrence Johnson in the 60 meters, who ranks first in the Big Ten this season and ninth in the NCAA in 6.61 second. Johnson is also ranked second all-time at UW running his personal best of 6.56 last March. He is just 0.01 seconds off the Big Ten and school record of 6.55 set by Deme Omole in 2007. Also competing in the sprints is grad student Colin Enz, who ranks 10th in the 400 meters in the Big Ten this season.
3. WEIGHTY EVENT: Badgers Sam Coil, Jason Swarens, and Cole Hooper are set to compete in the weight throw at the Red Hawk Invitational on Saturday. Coil is ranked third in the Big Ten this season with a personal best this season of 72 feet, 1 ½ inches, which ranks 10th nationally and third all-time at UW. Redshirt sophomore Jason Swarens is also competing this weekend, throwing a personal best this season of 67-9 landing him seventh in the Big Ten and sixth all-time at UW. Hooper is ranked 11th in the Big Ten this season and eighth all-time at UW, will also be competing.
4. SHOT PUT SHOWTIME: Redshirt junior Andrew Stone is set to compete in the shot put where he is ranked second all-time at UW, throwing a personal best of 65-0 ½ last February. He also ranks ninth in the Big Ten this season at 60-6. Swarens is ranked seventh in the Big Ten this season and third all-time at UW. Hooper is also set to compete in the shot put.
