MADISON, Wis. -- After a seven-point month that included goals against two top-five teams, Wisconsin women's hockey freshman
Laila Edwards has been named the WCHA Rookie of the Month, the league announced on Monday.
Edwards, the WCHA Rookie of the Week on Feb. 20, earns her first career monthly honor and is the third different Badger to earn WCHA Rookie of the Month honors as
Caroline Harvey and
Kirsten Simms have both received the accolade this year.
A native of Cleveland Heights, Ohio, Edwards posted seven points in February to lead all WCHA rookies thanks to four goals and three assists. Two of her four goals were game-winning goals, including a game-winning tally last Saturday that gave UW a 4-1 win over Minnesota State to complete the sweep of the Mavericks in the WCHA First-Round Series.
The winger also had a +5 plus/minus rating in the month that ranked second on the Badgers while her four goals were the second-most behind linemate
Jesse Compher.
The No. 6 Badgers head west to Minneapolis for the 2023 Kwik Trip WCHA Final Faceoff, on March 3-4. UW will face No. 4 Minnesota on Friday in a 5 p.m. game at Ridder Arena with the winner advancing to the league's championship game on Saturday at 2 p.m.
