Jugnauth tallies two goals, one assist, to lead Badgers
MADISON, Wis. — The Wisconsin men's hockey team fell 7-4 at Michigan on Saturday at Yost Ice Arena to close out the weekend series against the Wolverines..
Freshman forward Tyson Jugnauth posted a career high three-point performance (2g, 1a) but the Badgers were unable to overcome an early deficit.
In a crazy first period that saw a combined seven tallies and 34 shots on goal, Michigan (18-9-1, 10-8-0 Big Ten) netted three goals in the first 9:06 of the stanza to establish a lead.. Dylan Duke tapped in a back-door pass from TJ Hughes and Mackie Samoskevich 1:37 into the game. Two minutes later, Eric Ciccolini capitalized on a rebound set up by Jackson Hallum and Nick Granowicz. Ciccolini notched his second goal of the game on the power play at 9:06, assisted by TJ Hughes and Ethan Edwards.
Freshman defenseman Tyson Jugnauth gave the Badgers some momentum when he found the back of the net at 9:45 to cut Michigan's lead to 3-1. Mathieu De St. Phalle battled for the puck behind Michigan's net and sent it out to Cruz Lucius in the slot. Lucius partially fanned on a shot but the puck found Jugnauth as he came down from the point and he picked the top left corner.
Gavin Brindley added to the Wolverines lead at 12:47 in the first period when he hammered in a one-timer from the top of the circle, set up by Adam Fantilli and Michigan goaltender Erik Portillo.
TJ Hughes' power-play goal a minute later made it 5-1 and UW made a goaltending change to junior Kyle McClellan with the score 5-1 for Michigan.
Jugnauth then scored his second goal of the game at 15:56 in the first frame. Corson Ceulemans directed the puck to De St. Phalle along the boards in Michigan's zone. He sent a pass across the zone to Jugnauth on the point who took a stride before winding up a slap shot and hammering the puck past goaltender Erik Portillo.
The Wolverines increased their lead to 6-2 at the start of the second period when Edwards let off a one-timer from the point through a screen.
Michigan skated into the third period with a 7-2 lead after Granowicz scored on a rebound.
Sophomore forward Zach Urdahl found the back of the net for UW at 7:16 in the final frame. Captain Dominick Mersch fed the puck up the boards to Jugnauth on the point who skated the puck down into the corner and fired a shot on net for Urdahl to sweep past Portillo.
Graduate forward Brock Caufield closed out the scoring for the Badgers on the power play at 12:36 in the third period. Caufield won the face off back to Ceulemans on the point, who fired a shot towards the net. The puck deflected off a Michigan defender, but Caufield stood ready to finish the rebound.
