Freshman honored for stellar first year
MADISON, Wis. – After a standout first season with the Badgers, Wisconsin women's hockey freshman Caroline Harvey has been named WCHA Rookie of the Year the league announced on Wednesday.Â
A two-time WCHA Rookie of the Month and three-time WCHA weekly award winner, Harvey won the title thanks to her 35-point season on 11 goals and 24 assists, all while sporting an impressive +36 plus/minus rating. The 2022 Olympian's 35 points leads all WCHA rookies and ranks third for the Badgers this season, while her plus/minus ranks fifth in the league.Â
Harvey joins a great list of Badgers who have won the award, including Meghan Hunter (2001), Sara Bauer (2004), Meghan Duggan (2007), Annie Pankowski (2015), Abby Roque (2017), and current teammate Sophie Shirley (2019).Â
A native of Salem, New Hampshire, Harvey's 11 goals this year are tied for the seventh most in school history by a defender, and only Sis Paulsen has posted more points as a Badger rookie defender in the program's history.Â
The rookie blueliner earned spots on both the All-WCHA Second Team and All-Rookie Team. She was also named a top-three finalist for the WCHA Defender of the Year honors, as her scoring ranks second among league defenders.Â
The No. 6 Badgers head west to Minneapolis for the 2023 Kwik Trip WCHA Final Faceoff, on March 3-4. UW will face No. 4 Minnesota on Friday in a 5 p.m. game at Ridder Arena with the winner advancing to the league's championship game on Saturday at 2 p.m.
