200 medley relay sets school record
MINNEAPOLIS -- The 20th-ranked Wisconsin men's swimming team kicked off the first two days of the NCAA Championships with two school records and five All-America honors. The Badgers are in 18th place with 19 points after seven events.
On Wednesday night, the Badgers started off on a historic note, setting a school record in the 200 medley relay. Wes Jekel, Will Myhre, Constantin Bensch, and Ben Wiegand broke the six-year-old record by over half a second, setting the new standard at 1:23.09 to place UW 15th in the event.
On Thursday, junior Jake Newmark kept the momentum going, setting a school record in the 500 freestyle final in 4:10.12 seconds. It was the second time on the day that he broke the previous time of 4:11.98 set by Matthew Hutchins in 2017 after swimming 4:10.80 in the prelims. The time earned Newmark a fourth-place finish and a personal best time by over a second.
Wisconsin ended the night off with a 19th-place finish in the 200 free relay. Newmark, Wiegand, Andrew Benson and Taiko Torepe-Ormsby collectively hit the wall in 1:16.85, just .06 off the school record.
