Wisconsin downs No. 64 Iowa to increase win streak to eight games
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The No. 12 Wisconsin women's tennis team (11-2) came out on top once again, beating No. 64 Iowa (4-5) 6-1 in Minneapolis on Saturday. It was the Badgers second Big Ten match of the season, giving them an undefeated 2-0 record in conference play.
The Badgers are reaching historic territory after extending their win streak to eight matches. This marks just the fourth time in Badgers history they have tallied a win streak of at least eight matches. UW had win streaks of eight and 11 matches during the 1995-96 season and then posted another eight consecutive wins during the Covid-shortened 2019-20 season. Head coach Kelcy McKenna has been at the helm of two of the three seasons where Wisconsin has managed to win eight or more consecutive games.
On Saturday, Charmaine Seah and Taylor Cataldi hit the ground running in their doubles match against Barbara Pokorna and Pia Kranholdt, winning 6-2. Ava Markham and Maria Sholokhova won the doubles points for Wisconsin after beating Vipasha Mehra and Daianne Hayashida, 6-4.
With one point in hand, the Badgers had the momentum in their favor. Alina Mukhortova started singles play in a strong fashion and beat Mehra, 6-0, 6-3. Cataldi followed that up with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Pokorna along with Seah also being victorious against Kranholdt 6-4, 6-3. No. 103 Xinyu Cai and No. 62 Markham added the finishing touches on a strong day in Minneapolis.
Next up, Wisconsin heads to New Orleans on March 15 for another Big Ten match against Rutgers. First serve is set for Noon (CT).
