Wisconsin splits doubleheader against St. Thomas

The Badgers win game one against the Tommies before falling in game two

MADISON, Wis. - The Wisconsin softball team split the doubleheader against the University of St. Thomas despite putting up a total of twenty runs in the two games. The Badgers were victorious in game one, run-ruling the Tommies 10-0 before dropping game two 12-10 at Goodman Diamond.

GAME ONE

Bases were full of Badgers after a hit by pitch, walk and Brooke Kuffel single in the first, however, a converted Tommies double play stranded all three of the runners for Wisconsin.

Although the Badgers left the bases loaded in the first, they were cleared many times in the team's nine-run second inning. Christaana Angelopolus started the scoring frenzy with an RBI double, scoring Molly Schlosser, who had hit a single in her first at-bat. Rylie Crane brought in Angelopulos, who sat at third after a Skylar Sirdashney sac-bunt, on an RBI single for the freshman. Crane scored just moments later following a Katie Keller single and an Ellie Hubbard reach, thanks to a Tommie error. Brooke Kuffel produced once again for Wisconsin, hitting a 2-RBI single to center field, scoring Hubbard and Keller. Runners kept on coming in for the home team as Konwent plated the Badger's sixth run of the inning before Sirdashney came back up to bat and brought three more home with a single to center field to put the Badgers up 9-0.

The Tommies accumulated two hits in the game and just couldn't keep up with the offense that Wisconsin has been building. Molly Schlosser scored once again after drawing an initial walk in her second at-bat. Two singles hit by Christaana Angelopulos and Skylar Sirdashney brought Schlosser around for the team's tenth and final run.

Paytn Monticelli returned to the mound and struck out the side in the top of the fifth inning, ending game one of the doubleheader and giving Wisconsin the 10-0 run-rule victory. With this, the Badgers secured their sixth straight win heading into game two.

Maddie Schwartz (8-7) was the starting pitcher for the Badgers and pitched a complete three innings striking out four of the twelve batters she faced. Monticelli struck out five of the seven in her two-inning appearance, not allowing a single hit.

GAME TWO

The Wisconsin Badgers continued to put up runs in the second game against St. Thomas, starting in the first inning. Katie Keller began her 3-for-4 performance with her eighth double of the season and was plated following an Ellie Hubbard single and Kayla Konwent sac-fly.

In the second, Molly Schlosser ripped a triple to right-center to score Peyton Bannon, who had singled in the inning's first at-bat. Katie Keller then etched herself in the record book with the first recorded inside-the-park home run in Wisconsin history, racing home to score both her and Schlosser. The Badgers were up 4-0 heading into the third.

St. Thomas cut the Badgers lead in half after scoring two runs on three hits in the top of the inning. However, Wisconsin responded back in the bottom of the third initiated by a Brooke Kuffel single that she was able to advance to second on. Angelopulos score Bree Mitchell, running for Kuffel, on a shot just inside the right field line. Peyton Bannon came up clutch with Mitchell on third and Rylie Crane on second with a 2-RBI triple to the wall. Bannon stood on the bases just briefly before Skylar Sirdashney brought her in with a sacrifice fly to center and with that Wisconsin was up 8-0.

The visiting team fought their way back after a big three-run, four-hit fourth inning for the Tommies, with two doubles and two singles causing the chaos. The fifth inning was even more detrimental for Wisconsin as St. Thomas put up six runs on five hits to give them the 11-8 lead.

Skylar Sirdashney doubled to right center in the bottom of the fifth to attempt to get something going again for the Badgers but the momentum stayed with the Summit league team. Katie Keller did not let the fact that her team was behind affect her play, as the graduate transfer sent a home run out of the park this time to put Wisconsin within one.

St. Thomas was not done yet though as the opponent scored added am insurance run in the top of the seventh, their 12th of the game.

Molly Schlosser attempted to get a two-out rally going with an RBI double, scoring Bannon in the seventh inning, but was unfortunately stranded and the game ended with a final score of 12-10.
