Markham and Sholokhova recognized for stellar play
MADISON, Wis. – On Wednesday, the Big Ten released the women's tennis 2022-23 all-conference teams and individual award recipients. Senior Ava Markham and freshman Maria Sholokhova were both named to the All-Big Ten Team, with Markham being a unanimous selection. Markham was also named a Sportsmanship Award Honoree.
Â
Sholokhova hit the ground running in her first year at Wisconsin, finishing with a Big Ten doubles record of 7-3, most of which was in partnership with Markham, and a singles record of 6-2. She managed to defeat No. 47 Kari Miller, No. 72 Ashley Yeah, and No. 108 Isabella Harvison in her rookie season. Sholokhova reached as high as No. 59 in the nation for singles, an impressive feat for any player, but even more sensational for a first-year player. She also beat No. 32 Jackie Nyland and Taylor Johnson in doubles, along with Markham.
Â
Markham adds another two accolades to an already impressive resume at Wisconsin. She finished Big Ten play with a doubles record of 6-2 and a singles record of 7-2. Highlights of the season included beating No. 43 Sofiya Chekhlystova, No. 91 Paige Freeman and No. 113 Hadley Doyle in singles. Markham reached as high as No. 44 in the country in the ITA singles rankings and No. 54 in the doubles rankings with Sholokhova.
