Sharp wins 1500 meters

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The 15th-ranked Wisconsin men's track and field team wrapped up the Big Ten Outdoor Championships, crowing one event champion and picking up two silver medalists.

"We tried some things – we got away with some, but we didn't get away with it in other event." Mick Byrne, Director of Cross Country and Track & Field said. "We won two out of three (championships) this year. If we would have done some different things, maybe we were second or third but Nebraska, all credit to them, they had a great meet."

The men finished in fourth place with 72 points. Nebraska won the championship with 151 points while Minnesota was second with 122 points.

B1G win for Sharp

Redshirt senior Jackson Sharp took home gold in the 1500 meters, leading the race from start to finish. The Australia native used a strong kick over the last 100 meters to hold off three challengers and crossing in 3 minutes, 42.72 seconds.

Silver medals for Johnson, Spencer

Senior Lawrence Johnson wrapped up his Big Ten career with a silver medal in the 100 meters. Johnson, who has been fighting a minor injury this outdoor season, out-leaned a very tight field, crossing in 10.22. He was also a member of the ninth-place 4x100-meter relay. Johnson teamed with Giovanni Wearing, Sam Amusan, and Jalen Williams to finish in 40.93.

Sophomore Adam Spencer dropped down to the 800 meters this season after winning the 1500 meters in 2022. The Australia native moved from fourth place to second place over the last 100 meters. Spencer improved his personal best by nearly two seconds, crossing in 1:46.84 which ranks sixth on the UW all-time performance list.

In the 5000 meters, junior Bob Liking led the Badgers, finishing fourth in 13:57.37. Redshirt junior Rowen Ellenberg also scored in the event, placing eighth in 14:20.88

Justin Kiefel placed 10th in the triple jump with a leap of 47-4 ½.

The Badgers send qualifiers to the NCAA West Preliminary Round in Sacramento, California, on May 24-27.
