Five events to watch: Badgers head to Indiana for Big Ten Championships

Wisconsin looks to add to Big Ten titles

MADISON, Wis. – The No. 15 Wisconsin men's track and field team is heading to Bloomington, Indiana for the 2023 Big Ten Outdoor Championships this weekend. Day one of events begins on Friday with the decathlon at 11 a.m. CT. Field events begin at 11:45 a.m. CT while running events start 4:35 p.m. CT. The championships runs through Sunday.

Here are the five events to watch for this weekend:

1. TWO DAYS OF THE DECATHLON: Badgers Cade Amborn and Quinn Lansill are set to compete in this weekend's decathlon. Amborn currently leads the Badgers ranking fifth in the Big Ten this season in the 10-event challenge. Last month at the Bryan Clay Invitational, the Bangor, Wisconsin, native set a personal best in the decathlon with 7,383 points, recording personal bests in four events. Lansill is also set to compete in the decathlon on Friday-Saturday.

2. SPLIT SECOND:
2023 Big Ten Indoor chapion in the 60 meters Lawrence Johnson will be competing in this weekend's 100 meters and 200 meters. Last year, he broke the 15-year old record set by Demi Omole in the 100 meters, running a time of 10.08. Johnson also holds the school record in the 200 meters at 20.41. Despite being slowed by a minor injury, Johnson ranks fifth in the Big Ten in the 100 meters in 10.20.  He will be joined by redshirt sophomore Sam Amusan in the dashes while senior Colin Enz ranks in the top 20 of the 400 meters after running a season-best of 47.30 last weekend.

In the hurdles, freshman Giovanni Wearing is set to compete in the 110-meter high hurdles and 400-meter hurdles. Wearing ran a best of 13.95 in the 110-meter high hurdles this season, tying him ninth in the Big Ten this season.

3. DOMINANCE IN THE DISTANCE:
Junior Bob Liking is all too familiar in the 5,000 meters and 10,000 meters. Liking leads the Badgers and the Big Ten this season while also ranking sixth nationally in 13:27.92 and 28:00.77, respectively. Australian native Jackson Sharp, the 2023 Big Ten Indoor champion in the 3,000 meters and 5,000 meters, ranks second in the Big Ten in the 5,000 meters in 13:29.84. Wisconsin also has three other athletes ranking in the top 10 in the 5,000 meters in Jack Meijer, Rowen Ellenberg and Micah Wilson. In the 10,000 meters, Wilson ranks fourth.

In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, true freshman Logan Measner made an impressive debut in that event last weekend, running the second-fastest time in the Big Ten this season in 8:45.14.

4. TOP THROWS:
Setting a school record two weeks ago in the shot put, redshirt junior Jason Swarens threw a personal best of 67-0 ½, leading the Big Ten and ranking third nationally. Redshirt junior Andrew Stone ranks 10th in the shot put while also ranking third in the discus this season. Stone threw a personal best of 190-4 last weekend, which ranks second all time at Wisconsin. Swarens and redshirt freshman Jake Schaefer both rank in the top 16 in the discus.

The 2023 Big Ten Indoor champion in the weight throw, grad student Sam Coil ranks fourth in the Big Ten this outdoor season in the hammer with a personal best throw of 219-10. Swarens ranks 10th in the hammer while Cole Hooper is 14th.

5. MAY THE MIDDLE DISTANCE BE WITH YOU:
Last year's Big Ten Outdoor 1500-meter champion and this year's Big Ten Indoor mile champion, Adam Spencer, will race in the 800 meters this weekend. He ranks first in the Big Ten in the 1500 meters and fourth all-time at UW. Junior Abdullahi Hassan will take his talents to the 1500 meters this weekend. The Big Ten leader in the 800 meters, Hassan also ranks 11th in the Big Ten in the 1500 meters.
