Badgers send eight athletes to Austin

MADISON, Wis. – The 17th-ranked Wisconsin men's track and field team and the UW women's team wrap up the outdoor season by sending eight athletes to the NCAA Outdoor Championships Wednesday- Saturday at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas. The meet airs live on ESPN on Wednesday, and live on ESPN2 on Thursday through Saturday. All field events will be streamed live on ESPN+.

Here are five events to watch this weekend.Â
1. THROWING DOWN WITH THE BADGERS:  Women's shot put school record holder Josie Schaefer is competing in her third-straight NCAA Outdoor championship after placing second at the Big Ten Championships two weekends ago in the shot put and discus. Schaefer goes into the shot put ranked second in the NCAA this season with a school-record mark of 62 feet, 3 ¼ inches. The shot put begins at 9:10 p.m. Thursday. The Baraboo native also recorded a qualifying mark in the discus with her second throw at the NCAA West Preliminary Round. She tossed the disc 181-1 to finish sixth in the event. Schaefer is ranked 17th in the event and will compete Saturday at 7:35 p.m.
Redshirt junior Jason Swarens booked his ticket to his first NCAA championship, finishing 10th in the shot put at the preliminary round. The Terre Haute, Indiana, native set the UW record at 67- 4 3/4 at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships. Swarens, who will compete at 8:10 p.m. on Wednesday, is ranked seventh in the event.Â
2. HURDLING HUVEN: Senior Destiny Huven earned a trip to the NCAA Championships for the second-straight year in the 100-meter hurdles. The Milwaukee native finished fourth in her heat at the NCAA West Preliminary Round, qualifying in 12.99 seconds to advance on time. Her time was the seventh fastest on the day and a season best. She is currently ranked 23rd in the event and will compete in the semifinals Thursday at 8:32 p.m. with finals Saturday at 8:42 p.m.
3. LIGHTNING LO: Senior Lawrence Johnson qualified for his second NCAA Outdoor Championship, competing in the 100 meters on Wednesday at 7:46 p.m. Johnson ran a season best of 10.16 seconds in the 100 meters at the preliminary round. The Waunakee native won his heat to automatically qualify for the national championship. Johnson finished ninth overall, finishing just 0.8 seconds off his personal best time.
4. MIDDLE DISTANCE MAYHEM: Sophomore Adam Spencer ranks ninth in the 1500 meters after automatically qualifying for the national championship, finishing third in the 1500 meters in 3:38.90 at the NCAA Preliminary round. The Australian took third in his heat, the fastest heat of the two quarterfinals. Spencer was among the top-four runners the entire race, moving up one place over the final 400 meters.
In the 800 meters, junior Abdullahi Hassan finished second in his heat and third overall to also automatically qualify for the NCAA Championships. The Toronto native was in third place with a lap remaining and used a 54.5 second last lap to move into second, crossing in 1:46.56, just 0.5 seconds off his personal best. Hassan ranks fourth heading into Austin and will compete in the semifinals Wednesday at 8:14 p.m.
5. GOING THE DISTANCE: Competing in the men's 5,000-meters is redshirt junior Jackson Sharp and set to run in the 10,000-meters is junior Bob Liking.
Sharp improved his personal best mark by more than three seconds to finish third in the 5000 meters in 13:26.56 at the NCAA West Prelims. Sharp, who ranks sixth on UW's all-time list, will compete at 9:55 p.m. Friday.
In the 10,000 meters, Liking qualified for his second NCAA Championships, finishing third in the 10,000 meters in the preliminary round. Liking ran among the top-10 athletes the entire race and crossed in 28:21.65. He has a personal best of 28:00.77, which sits second on UW's top-10 list. Liking competes in the final Wednesday at 9:08 p.m.
