Nicolar Rivera to compete in Under-20 World Team Trials
June 01, 2023 | Wrestling
Wisconsin rising sophomore to compete at 57 KG freestyle
Rivera is wrestling at 57 kilograms in the U20 bracket after qualifying thanks to a third-place finish at the U.S. Open in April in Las Vegas. Rivera finished 9-1 overall at the U.S. Open to earn the bronze, including a 10-0 victory in 2:32 over Brendan McCrone (Ohio) in the place-winning bout.
Rivera will need to advance to the finals, which are best-of-three, and then win two of the final three bouts to earn a spot on the U.S. Junior men's freestyle world team. The champion in each U20 (Juniors) weight class will represent the United States at the 2023 UWW World Championships. The top eight place winners in the U20 division, who are age and grade eligible, qualify for the Junior and U16 National Championships later this summer.
Badgers alumnus Tyler Dow also competed in the tournament on Friday and advanced to the finals of the Under-23 Greco-Roman tournament. Dow earned three wins to advance including a dominant 10-0 0:45 win over Edmond Ruth (Pennsylvania), who wrestled at Illinois this past season, in the Semis. Dow lost in finals (11-9, 10-2) to Tyler Eischens (CA RTC).
Rivera's tournament starts Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m. Finals of the tournament start at 3 p.m.
