Badgers ready for a full fall season
MADISON, Wis. – The women's tennis team has a full slate for its 2023 fall season, competing in 11 events across the country.
Here are five things to know:
1. COACHES: Kelcy McKenna returns for her eighth season at the helm of the program in 2023-24. The team's newest assistant coach, Marek Michalicka, is a familiar face around town. Michalicka played collegiately at Wisconsin and earned All-Big Ten honors. He returns to UW from Michigan, where he spent two seasons as a volunteer assistant for the men's tennis program.
2. LOOKING BACK: The Badgers went 20-7 overall (8-3 Big Ten) in the 2023 spring season. That momentum carried into postseason play, as Wisconsin earned itself an upset win in the Big Ten tournament defeating No. 5 Northwestern, 4-0. UW then went on to compete in the NCAA tournament, defeating No. 41 LSU (4-1) in the first round before dropping to No. 12 Iowa State (1-4) in the second round.
3. INTERNATIONAL PRESENCE: This year's roster features three student-athletes from across the globe in Xinyu Cai (Wuhan, China), Alina Mukhortova (Krasnodar, Russia) and Maria Sholokhova (Sochi, Russia).
4. SCHEDULE: The fall season focuses on the play of the individuals rather than the team. The Badgers will divide and conquer 11 events ranging from California all the way to Edmonton, Alberta – none of the events are held in Madison. Players will see overlap with some tournaments happening simultaneously.
5. NEXT UP: The fall season gets underway this weekend, beginning with the Kitty Harrison Invitational hosted by North Carolina. The event is scheduled to run Friday, Sept. 15 through Sunday, Sept. 17 in Chapel Hill, NC.
