MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin women's soccer team (6-1-3) took down previously undefeated Iowa (6-1-2) Thursday night at the McClimon Soccer Complex. After the 1-0 win, the Badgers sit fourth in the Big Ten standings through two matches with a record of 1-0-1.
How it happened
The rain began pouring down right before kickoff, with the Wisconsin Badgers taking on the Iowa Hawkeyes in both team's second Big Ten match of the season. Both sides knew it was a game that would be decided by whoever made the least amount of mistakes due to the slick conditions.
The Badgers hit the back of the net first in the 24th minute. It was a linkup between the two points leaders for the Badgers, with Emma Jaskaniec taking the ball out wide and crossing it into the box. Aryssa Mahrt met the ball in the air and directed it into the bottom right corner, giving Iowa's keeper no chance to save it.
Mahrt has now scored in back-to-back matches and has four goals and three assists on the season. She leads the team in goals, while Jaskaniec leads the team in assists, with the graduate student having three goals and four assists so far.
From there, the Badgers managed the game and sealed the win. The center-back pairing of Hailey Baumann and Aidan McConnell once again proved to be invaluable, playing a huge role in the shutout. In the rare scenario that an attacker did get through, goalkeeper Erin McKinney was there to clean up, like she has done all season.
