No. 1 Badgers pounce on Lions, 16-1

Three Badgers score hat tricks as UW completes a sweep of Lindenwood

MARYLAND HEIGHTS, Mo. – It was a record-setting afternoon in Missouri for the top-ranked Wisconsin women's hockey team as the Badgers blitzed LIndenwood, 16-1, at the Centene Community Ice Center. 

Cassie Hall posted four goals, becoming the seventh player in school history to accomplish that feat, while Lacey Eden and Sophie Helgeson each had hat tricks leading the Badgers (2-0-0) to a school record 16 goals. 

Caroline Harvey got things started for the Badgers in the first period, before Hall grabbed her first collegiate goal just over two minutes later to make it 2-0.

Britta Curl tipped in a shot from Harvey for a Badgers power play goal, putting UW up 3-0 at the end of the first.

UW posted six goals in the second period as Lacey Eden and Sophie Helgeson each posted two goals in the period while Hall and Kelly Gorbatenko each added goals. Helgeson and Gorbatenko both posted their first career tallies in the stanza as UW went into the second intermission with a 9-1 lead. 

The Badgers matched their school record with a seven-goal third period as Hall scored twice in the period, becoming the eighth Badger to post four goals in a game. Eden and Helgeson also joined the hat trick party while Sarah Wozniewicz, Marianne Picard and Kirsten Simms scored in the final frame.  

Ava McNaughton got her first career start in net for the Badgers, stopping 16 shots she faced. 

Notes of the Game
- Wisconsin matched its school record with seven goals in a period as UW has accomplished that feat four times in school history. 
- The Badgers tied the NCAA record for margin of victory with a goal margin of 15.
- Friday marked the first time in school history that three Badgers recorded hat tricks in the same game. 
- The Badgers scored a new program-high 16 goals against the Lions, surpassing the previous record of 14 goals scored against Bemidji State on Nov. 18, 2000. UW also set a school record for margin of victory with 15 goals. 
- UW's 16 goals were one shy of the NCAA record of 17 goals, set by Harvard against Boston College on Jan. 28, 2003, and are also a WCHA record. 
- Cassie Hall, Kelly Gorbatenko and Sophie Helgeson each recorded their first collegiate goals while Ava Murphy and Anna Wilgren recorded their first points as Badgers.

On scoring her first career goal and hat trick in the same game:

"It was pretty special. Obviously my teammates set me up pretty nicely so I am really grateful for them and it was really awesome."

On how the first weekend of the season went:
"I think it went pretty well. First game of the year is a challenge just to get things figured out and settle everyone, but overall I think we did really well and I think we got better each period."

On getting the chance to play at LaBahn next weekend:

"I'm super excited. The support from the fans and the atmosphere is unreal, so it's something I am really looking forward to."

On scoring her first career goal and grabbing a hat trick:
"It's a very special feeling, but I couldn't have done it without my teammates."

Up Next: The Badgers will return to Madison to host Boston College in a Thursday-Friday series at LaBahn Arena. UW's home-opener on Thursday is set for a 7 p.m. start while Friday's tilt also starts at 7 p.m.  Two-time Olympian Karyn Bye will drop the puck prior to the home opener while the Badgers will raise its 2023 NCAA Championship Banner prior to puck drop on Friday,
