Badgers win six bouts against Sooners at Virginia Duals
HAMPTON, Va. — No. 17 Wisconsin re-opened the dual-match season with a 22-16 victory against No. 21 Oklahoma on Friday at the 2024 Virginia Duals.
Held at the Hampton Coliseum in Hampton, the Virginia Duals is one of the nation's great historic tournaments and featured 10 matches with competitive brackets for high school and college teams.
The Badgers defeated the Sooners in six of 10 bouts, led by four major decisions won by Eric Barnett (125 pounds), Nicolar Rivera (133), Dean Hamiti (165) and Max Maylor (174).
Wisconsin jumped out to a 8-0 lead after Barnett defeated Oklahoma's Conrad Hendriksen 14-2 to open the dual match, followed by Rivera's 16-3 victory against Jace Koelzer.
Hamiti later took down 29th-ranked Cael Carlson with a 19-5 major decision and Maylor added his own bonus-point victory with a 12-1 win against 29th-ranked Tate Picklo.
The Badgers also collected wins at 149 pounds from Joseph Zargo with a gritty 2-1 decision with riding time against 30th-ranked Willie McDougald and Shane Liegel defeated Guiseppe Hoose 6-3. Liegel's victory also ensured the Badgers' team win in the dual match, surpassing Oklahoma's possible points needed for the upset.
Oklahoma earned wins at 141, 157, 197 and 285 pounds including two tech falls in the final two bouts.
Wisconsin returns to the Hampton Coliseum on Saturday to face Virginia at 12:30 p.m. CT / 1:30 p.m. ET in the final dual match of the Virginia Duals. Fans can watch the Badgers wrestler the Cavaliers live on FloWrestling.
