
Badgers take home five events at Wisconsin Midwest Invitational

Throws and distance groups star in Chicago
CHICAGO – The UW men's track and field team won five events at Saturday's Wisconsin Midwest Invitational in Chicago.
Select sprints, hurdles, throws and distance student-athletes competed against teams from Purdue, Milwaukee, Southern Illinois and Chicago State at the Gately Track in the first of two meets UW will host at the facility this season.
On the hurdles and sprints side, Gio Wearing starred as he won the 60-meter hurdles and set a personal best time of 7.81 seconds, a time that is tied for third on the Badgers' top-10 list. Wearing also set a personal record in the 60 meters finishing at 6.91 en route to a sixth-place finish.
Sam Amusan earned two top-five finishes in the springs, taking second in the 300 meters in 33.87 and placing fourth in the 60 meters in 6.90.
It was another big day for the Badgers in the mile as the team swept the podium, finishing 1-2-3. Grad transfer Joe dosReis won the event, crossing the line in 4 minutes and 4.86 seconds. Freshman Bryce Stachewicz finished as the runner-up for the second meet in a row, posting a time of 4:06.05. Sophomore Micah Wilson rounded out the all-Badger top three at 4:06.52.
A quartet of freshmen continued the strong middle and long-distance performances. JJ Williams claimed the 800-meter title, finishing in 1:54.04. Andrew Casey finished second in the 600 meters at 1:18.34 after winning the mile in his last meet. Nick Gilles and Liam Newhart, who ran the 3000 meters unattached from UW, finished 1-2. Gilles crossed the line in 8:12.97 while Newhart was right behind in 8:14.82.
The throwers stood out in their season debut, highlighted by senior Andrew Stone's shot put victory. The 2022 Honorable Mention All-American recorded a heave of 62 feet. 1/2 inch (18.91m). Jason Swarens followed close behind in second at 61 feet (18.59m). A native of Indiana, Swarens also finished a team-best second in the weight throw with a toss of 65 feet, 9 1/2 inches.
Finally, the Badger 4x400 relay team of Amusan, Elliott Harris, Jalen Williams and Wearing outlasted Milwaukee and won the event in 3 minutes and 21.94 seconds.
