Badgers split bouts 5-5 with Spartans in loss
EAST LANSING, Mich. — No. 17 Wisconsin took five of the 10 bouts on the road at Michigan State, but lost the dual match 22-15.
Low scoring by the Badgers (6-3, 0-2 B1G) and two bouts won by fall by the Spartans (8-3, 1-3 B1G) gave the home team the Big Ten victory.
After the match opened at 157 pounds with a Michigan State pin, Wisconsin earned decision wins from Dean Hamiti (165), Max Maylor (174), Eric Barnett (125), Nico Rivera (133) and Joseph Zargo (149).
Michigan State later won by pin at heavyweight (285), while also winning by major decision at 197.
Ranked No. 5 in the country, Hamiti grinded out a 5-3 decision over ninth-ranked Caleb Fish for his 17th victory of the season (17-1 overall).
Barnett also improves to 17-2 overall with his 4-2 victory against MSU's Tristan Lujan.
Despite the team loss, Maylor, Rivera and Zargo all picked up wins that will surely aid them in later-season qualifications to the NCAA tournament.
Wisconsin returns home to host No. 6 Nebraska on Sunday, Jan. 26 at 1 p.m. at the UW Field House. The match will be televised nationally on Big Ten Network.
