Badgers beat Bulldogs for third-straight series sweep

Six Badgers light the lamp to complete UMD sweep

MADISON, Wis. – Six different Badgers lit the lamp to help the No. 1 Wisconsin women's hockey team to a 7-3 victory over the No. 3 Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs on Sunday at LaBahn Arena in Madison.

Maggie Scannell scored twice, while Lacey Eden, Marianne Picard, Caroline Harvey, Cassie Hall and Laila Edwards found the back of the net once. The Badgers improved their conference record to 2-0-0 and overall record to 6-0-0.

Eden opened the scoring for the Badgers seven minutes into the first period. The Bulldog's goaltender saved Emma Venusio's shot from the point but Eden pounced on the loose puck and tapped it into the back of the net. UMD equalized with just over five minutes to play in the first period to send the game into the first intermission tied at one.

The Badgers scored three back-to-back goals to extend their lead to 4-1 in the second period. Hannah Halverson sped through the Bulldogs' defenders and passed it back to Scannell, who drilled it into the back of the net. The Badgers' second goal of the period came on some quick passing in the offensive zone. Vivian Jungels passed to Harvey, who sent a long pass over to Picard, who fired a screened shot into the back of the net.

Harvey scored on the power play for the Badgers' third goal of the period and fourth of the game. Casey O'Brien passed it to a wide-open Harvey at the point, who took her time and drilled a snipe into the top corner. The Bulldogs closed the gap to two late in the second period with a power-play goal of their own to end the period 4-2.

The Badgers added three goals to the board in the third period. Scannell scored early on the power play for her second of the night as she swatted down an airborne puck, driving with momentum into the slot and beating the UMD goaltender on her pad side. Hall notched her third point and first goal of the game just a minute later in the third period.

With 14:36 to play, the Bulldogs got a goal back to Wisconsin's lead down to 6-3. The Badgers had a significant penalty kill later in the period as Sarah Wozniewicz picked up a five-minute major for boarding, sending Wisconsin to a 5-on-3 penalty kill as Venusio served out an earlier penalty.

The Badgers killed the first penalty, and the Bulldogs pulled their goaltender to make it 6-on-4 hockey. Edwards capitalized, finding the back of the empty net, and the Badgers successfully killed both penalties to end the game 7-3.

UW head coach Mark Johnson
On learning from the series:

""A lot of things that went on we can learn from. That's the nice part about this weekend and next weekend: there are things that we'll be exposed to and we'll see how we handle those things. Today [was] a good learning opportunity, obviously the victory is a big part of it, but more importantly it's the education of how to play the game and what to do in certain situations."

Junior defender Caroline Harvey
On being ready for the challenge:

"We expected them to come out harder today, especially after last night's game. Just expecting that, being on our toes, coming out strong and keep building off each period. We were ready for the challenge and we're excited to have this game today and take care of business."

Freshman forward Maggie Scannell
On being a Badger:

"I'm just so excited to be a part of this great community. The energy in this building and the fans are amazing. The fans are so supportive, and that just brings energy for our team and helps us play at our best"

On looking forward to the Border Battle against Minnesota:
"I'm so excited for it. I went to Shattuck St. Mary's for high school, so we ended up being able to watch a few of them in the past. But, I'm just as excited to be able to play in the game and experience the energy."

Up Next: The Badgers hit the road for a Border Battle at Minnesota this weekend. Puck drop on Friday at Ridder Arena is at 6 p.m. while Saturday's contest is at 3 p.m. Both games can be heard on The Game 1070 and Saturday's game will air on BTN.
