1. RAPID RISERS: The women's program recently garnered its highest rank in the USTFCCCA National Coaches Poll since the conclusion of the 2019 season, where they were led by the likes of a pair of Wisconsin natives in Alicia Monson and Amy Davis. It was then where the team earned a No. 7 rank after placing seventh at the NCAA Championships. Earlier this week, the Badgers rose nine spots to No. 10—taking the biggest leap amongst all programs in the nation.
2. MEET HISTORY: Last year, Leané Willemse paced the Badgers with a 10th-place finish at the Sean Earl Lakefront Invitational—earning her career PR in a 6K race with an impressive time of 20:05.3. The junior, at the time, would go on to finish as the runner-up at the Big Ten Championships a month later en route to Wisconsin's second-place finish as a team.
3. HOT START: The Badgers have hit their stride in the early portion of their 2024 campaign, recently placing fifth in a competitive field at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational Presented by Under Armour last Friday. Wisconsin defeated nine ranked opponents in the process—executing a quality team-run to finish with 182 points as a unit. Shea Ruhly led the way by placing 30th—running her 6K in 20:40.6 in her first race since 2022. Before Nuttycombe, the Badgers notched two runner-up finishes in the Badger Classic and Big Ten Preview.
4. TERRIFIC TRANSFERS: Lindsay Cunningham (Winona State), Carolyn Shult (UW-Eau Claire) and Fiona McLoughlin (Stony Brook) have each made an impact early on for the women's cross country program, all entering their first fall season as a Badger. Shult and McLoughlin each put together strong races at the aforementioned Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational, including a 36th-place finish turned in by Shult. Cunningham continued to run well after earning gold at the Big Ten Preview a couple of weeks ago, fresh off of being named the Big Ten Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Week on Sept. 18.
5. UP NEXT: After a week off, the Badgers are back at Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course to host the Wisconsin Pre-Nationals on Saturday, Oct. 19. The Women's 6K Championship race for the event is set for 10:00 a.m. CT—serving as a preview of the NCAA Championships that are set to be housed in Madison on Nov. 23.
