Men's soccer drops close battle to Rutgers

Boltz scores ninth goal of the season in conference battle

MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin Badgers men's soccer (6-3-1, 1-3-1) team lost 3-1 to the Rutgers Scarlet Knights (4-5-2, 1-2-1) Friday in Madison.

How it Happened
The Badgers scored early in the contest, as freshman and Wisconsin's leading goalscorer Dean Boltz scored his ninth goal of the season. A cross in from Markie Hrvojevic deflected off the Rutgers keeper and trickled out to the edge of the penalty box for Boltz to smash in.

The teams traded chances, but the Badgers took their 1-0 lead to the half.

The Badgers received a penalty kick in the 52nd minute, and the Rutgers goalkeeper saved Dean Boltz' shot.

Rutgers scored a penalty kick of their own in the 58th minute.

The Badgers went down to 10 men in the 59th minute when goalkeeper Matisse Hebert received a red for serious foul play.

The Scarlet Knights scored the second of the night to take the lead in the 73rd minute, but then fell to 10 men in the 75th minute as Curt Cavlov received a second yellow card.

Rutgers closed out the scoring in the 88th minute with their third of the night to end the game 3-1.

Notes to Know
  • Dean Boltz' ninth goal of the season is enough to lead the Big Ten and ties him for fourth in the NCAA, one goal behind the three-way tie for first.
  • With the assist on Boltz' goal, Markie Hvorjevic became the 11th player on the Badgers roster with at least two points this season.
