No. 2 Badgers battle back in overtime to defeat No. 5 Gophers, 4-3

UW extends win streak to 14 in front of sellout crowd

MADISON, Wis. – Thanks to an exhilarating overtime goal from Laila Edwards, the second-ranked Wisconsin women's hockey team took down No. 5 Minnesota, 4-3, on Friday night at LaBahn Arena.

Laney Potter, Marianne Picard and Britta Curl each also found the back of the next as the Badgers (27-4-0, 21-4-0 WCHA) reigned victorious over the rival Gophers (24-6-1, 18-6-1 WCHA) to extend Wisconsin's winning streak to 14 games.

Halfway through the first period the Gophers grabbed the lead after taking advantage of a 1-on-1 opportunity.

For her third goal in four games, Potter buried one in the back of the net to make it a tie game.

Picard tipped in a shot from Chayla Edwards with just over five minutes remaining in the second frame to give the Badgers their first lead of the night.

The Gophers evened it up at 2-2 early in the third period, but Curl scored her 10th career goal against Minnesota, going between her legs to give UW a 3-2 lead with 12:34 left.

Minnesota tied it up on the power play late in the third period, forcing overtime.

In exciting fashion, Edwards slipped one behind her back while falling down to secure the overtime-winner.

Jane Gervais stopped 26 of the shots she faced for her 14th win of the season.

Three Notes of the Game
- The Badgers picked up their first overtime win against the Gophers since knocking out the Border Battle rival in the national semifinal game last season thanks to a goal from Caroline Harvey nearly 17 minutes into overtime.
- Laila Edwards picked up her first career overtime goal in the win over Minnesota. The sophomore now has five career game-winning goals.
- Wisconsin outshot Minnesota 35-29.

Head Coach Mark Johnson
On the high-level game:

"Both teams obviously are playing well and both goalies played well. They had some highlight-type saves, especially in the second period. We probably expected what we saw in regards to teams that are playing at a pretty high level and playing pretty confident. Even the 3-on-3 where Jane (Gervais) gives you the opportunity on two different situations where we wanted to break away, that she made a save that kept us going. And then Laila (Edwards) makes a play to end it."

Sophomore Laila Edwards
On bouncing back after her penalty:

"I think at this level it's important to keep a level head. I was a bit down after getting that penalty but I think the main emotion I felt after getting that goal was relief because I knew I let the team down and I had to make it up. I felt instant relief and I was very grateful."

On her exciting overtime goal:
"I don't know how it happened until I go back and look at a video. I don't even know where it went in or even if I put it in - I think I did."

Captain Britta Curl
On the tough fight against the Golden Gophers:

"Any time we play the Golden Gophers, it's a rollercoaster, and it's pretty back and forth, but we expected that. I thought we played really well in the first. They got one on us, but we never deflated and we were a good team in overtime and someone is going to put it away."

Up Next: The Badgers and Golden Gophers wrap up their series on Saturday with a 2 p.m. tilt at LaBahn Arena. The game is sold out, but fans can watch on Big Ten Plus or listen on The Game 1070 AM.
