MINNEAPOLIS - No. 22 Wisconsin claimed three of 10 bouts in a 28-12 loss at No. 11 Minnesota on Friday in a Big Ten wrestling dual match.
Wisconsin's Dean Hamiti led the Badgers in scoring at 165 pounds with a 20-3 tech fall in 5:00 over Minnesota's Blaine Brenner. Hamiti scored five takedowns and a four-point nearfall in the victory, improving to 22-1 overall with 19 of those wins by bonus-point (eight pins, six tech falls and five major decisions).
The Badgers also scored team points at 149 from 19th-ranked Joseph Zargo's 13-5 major decision upset against 16th-ranked Drew Roberts and Max Maylor scored a last-second takedown to earn a 4-1 decision at 184 over Andrew Sparks.
Wisconsin narrowly lost at 133 pounds as Nicolar Rivera took Tyler Wells into overtime after a 1-1 tie in regulation. Rivera was initially awarded the victory by pin, but an official review due to a Minnesota challenge rescinded the pin and awarded Wells a takedown and the 4-1 decision in sudden victory. Minnesota was penalized one team point during the 133-pound bout due to control of mat.
Also tied up 1-1 heading into the end of regulation, Shane Liegel lost a hard-fought decision 4-1 after Minnesota's Isaiah Salazar scored a takedown in the closing seconds at 184 pounds.
Wisconsin remains on the road this weekend heading to No. 3 Iowa on Sunday. The Badgers wrestle the Hawkeyes at 1 p.m. CT on Big Ten Network live at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
