Ten Wisconsin rowers take first strokes towards Paris 2024 Olympics

Two Badgers earn automatic invites to upcoming Olympic Selection Camp
SARASOTA, Fla. – A total of 10 Wisconsin rowing alumni began their quests to become part of the U.S. Olympic Team for Paris 2024 last weekend at USRowing's 2024 Winter Speed Order at Nathan Benderson Park.
At stake were 18 automatic invitations to the Olympic Selection Camp that runs March 3-24 in Sarasota, including nine for the women and nine for the men. Eventually, 48 women and 48 men will be invited to attend the selection camp.
Earning automatic invites for the Badgers were 2020 Olympian Maddie Wanamaker, for her second-place finish in the women's pair, and four-time national team member Sophia Vitas, who placed second in the women's single sculls.
Lauren O'Connor, a 2023 national team rower, placed fourth in the women's single sculls to finish one spot outside of an automatic invite position.
The highest men's finisher was three-time national team rower Michael Knippen, who placed sixth in the single sculls.
In addition to those four rowers, six other Badgers competed. Those included Isa Darvin, who placed 10th in the women's pair, current UW women's head coach Vicky Opitz, who took 13th in the women's pair, Grace Joyce, who took 14th in the women's single sculls, Breck Duncan, who finished 17th in the men's single sculls, Claire Friedlander, who placed 20th in the women's single sculls and Dylan Green, who was 31st in the men's single sculls.
Rowers for the Olympic women's double sculls, lightweight women's double sculls, women's four, men's four and women's eight will be chosen through the selection camp in March.
The women's single sculls, women's pair and men's pair for the Olympics will be chosen at the 2024 U.S. Olympic Team Trials that run April 2-7 in Sarasota, Florida.
A group of boats that the U.S. has not yet qualified for the Olympics (men's single sculls, men's double sculls, lightweight men's double sculls, women's quadruple sculls, men's quadruple sculls) will be chosen through the 2024 U.S. Olympic Team Trials.
The unqualified men's eight lineup will be chosen via the March selection camp.
Those boats will then race at the 2024 World Rowing Final Olympic & Paralympic Games with a final chance to qualify for Paris 2024.
The Paris 2024 Olympics take place July 26-Aug. 11.
