Magnificent Measner: Sophomore claims Big Ten steeplechase crown

Badgers end second day of Big Tens in second with 38 points
ANN ARBOR, Michigan — Wisconsin men's track and field sophomore Logan Measner won the 3000 meter steeplechase as the Badgers sit in second overall following Day 2 of the 2024 Big Ten Outdoor Championships.
Measner stayed with the leaders of the pack for the first 2000 meters before making his move and blowing by the rest of the field, finishing in 8 minutes, 40.98 seconds. The Jackson, Wisconsin, native is the first Badger since 2013 to win the steeplechase Big Ten crown and the 10th different UW athlete in school history.
Teammate Ben Nibbelink took fourth in the steeplechase, crossing the line in 8:52.46 to tally five points for Wisconsin.
Quinn Lansill had a stellar day in the decathlon, rising three overall spots for a third-place finish and bronze medal.
The Badger junior collected a season-best point total of 7,116 points thanks to a trio of top-four finishes during the final day of the competition.
Lansill began the second day of the decathlon with a fourth-place showing in the 110-meter hurdles, clocking in at 15.05. He followed that up with a toss of 125-6 (38.26m) in the discus despite rainy conditions. The Brooklyn, New York, native posted a personal-best clearance in the pole vault, soaring 13-5 ¼ (4.10 meters), good for sixth.
Lansill took sixth in the javelin with a mark of 155-9 (47.48 meters) before closing out the afternoon with a time of 4:37.46 in the 1500 meters to place fourth in the event.
In the shot put, Jason Swarens earned a top-10 finish with a mark of 58-8 (17.88 meters).
Four advance to Sunday's finals
Jalen Williams punched his ticket to the final of the 400 meters after a personal-best showing in the event. The sophomore finished in 47.25, which was the sixth-fastest time of the qualifying round. Elliott Harris narrowly missed out on advancing as he placed 10th in 47.45.
Giovanni Wearing won his section of the 110 hurdles, clocking in 13.98 to advance to Sunday's final. His time was the fifth-fastest in the competition.
In the 800 meters, Adam Spencer and Andrew Casey both moved onto Sunday's final thanks to top-five finishes. Spencer won his heat in 1:48.88, earning the automatic qualifier and placing fourth overall. Casey ran a faster time than Spencer at 1:48.79 and earned third in the event.
Up Next: The championships wrap up on Sunday. Field events start at 10 a.m., and running events begin at 11:45 a.m. The meet is streamed live on B1G+. The Badgers enter the final day of competition in second place with 38 points, while Nebraska leads with 57.
