MADISON, Wis. —
John Tonje, a versatile 6-foot-6 wing player, has signed with the Wisconsin men's basketball program, head coach
Greg Gard announced on Thursday.
Tonje (pronounced TAHN-jay) most recently played at Missouri, but his lone graduate season with the Tigers was hampered by a recurring injury suffered during the offseason that ultimately led to him sitting out the year after playing only eight games.
Prior to Missouri, Tonje spent four seasons at Colorado State where he played a total of 122 games (46 starts) and scored 1,051 points. During a breakout senior campaign with the Rams, he started all 33 games and averaged a career best 14.6 points per game, plus 4.7 rebounds and 1.3 assists per contest. He shot 47.3 percent from the floor, including 38.9 percent from 3-point range.
"We are thrilled to add
John Tonje to our team for next season," Gard said. "His five years of experience and production at a high level will be extremely valuable to our program. John has good positional size, strength, and the ability to help impact our team immediately on both ends of the floor. He is a multidimensional wing with the ability to shoot the 3, score off the bounce and get to the free throw line. Everything about John as a person, student and player is in line with who we want in our locker room. His presence will be noticeable on our team from day one."
Tonje played for the Cameroon National Team last summer during the FIBA Olympic Pre-Qualifying Tournament in Nigeria. He helped Cameroon to a perfect 4-0 record and advance to the final rounds of the qualifying tournament for the Paris 2024 Olympics.
