MADISON, Wis. – After a successful weekend at the NCAA West First Round, six Wisconsin track and field student-athletes will take their talents to Hayward Field for the 2024 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, June 5-8, in Eugene, Oregon.
On the men’s side, freshman Andrew Casey will compete in the 800 meters, junior Adam Spencer will race in the 1500 meters, senior Jackson Sharp will take part in the 5000 meters, sophomore Giovanni Wearing will compete in the 110-meter hurdles and Jason Swarens will throw the shot put. Olivia Roberts will represent the UW women in the hammer throw.
A freshman from Lakeville, Minnesota, Casey posted two personal-best performances at the NCAA West First Round in Fayetteville, Arkansas, last weekend to advance to the NCAA outdoor meet. His time of 1:47.41 in the 800 meters on Friday ranks seventh on the school’s top-10 list and is the fastest time in program history by a true freshman. The semifinals of the 800 meters will take place at 8:14 p.m. CT on Wednesday with the final to take place on Friday at 9:14 p.m. CT.
The Australian National Champion in the 1500 meters, Spencer ran the third-fastest time in Arkansas last weekend to advance to the NCAA championships in the 1500 meters for the third-straight season. The Melbourne, Australia native holds the school record of 3:31.81 set at the London Diamond League meet last year and finished runner-up in the mile at the NCAA indoor meet earlier this season. Spencer will toe the line in the 1500 meters on Wednesday at 6:46 p.m. CT while the final is set for Friday at 8:12 p.m. CT.
One of the most decorated UW distance runners in program history, Sharp will wrap up his collegiate career at the NCAA championships on Friday, June 7 at 9:55 p.m. CT in the 5000 meters. The Australian placed third in the 5000 meters at the Australian Athletics Championships and ran the fourth-fastest time in UW history of 13:17.08 at the LA Grand Prix earlier this month. Sharp finished third in the 5000 meters at last year’s NCAA outdoor meet and looks to earn his seventh All-America honor for the Cardinal and White.
The Big Ten runner-up in the 110-meter hurdles, Wearing ranks second in school history in the event with a personal best of 13.41 as only UW legend Reggie Torian has run a faster time than Wearing. A native of Ashburn, Virginia, Wearing is the first Badger to compete at the NCAA outdoor meet in the 110-meter hurdles since Nate Larkin during the 2009 season. The semifinals of the 110-meter hurdles will take place on Wednesday, June 5 at 7:32 p.m. CT. The finals will be held on Friday, June 7 at 8:42 p.m. CT.
The school-record holder in the outdoor shot put, Swarens ranks fifth in the NCAA this season in the shot put with a toss of 65 feet, 9 ½ inches set at the Badger Challenge earlier this month. Swarens earned first-team All-America honors earlier this season thanks to a fourth-place finish in the shot put at the 2024 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. In addition to holding the outdoor school record in the shot put of 67-4 ¾, the Terre Haute, Indiana, native ranks second in the indoor shot put with a PR of 65-4 ¾. Swarens will compete on Wednesday, June 5 at 7:40 p.m. CT.
Roberts will conclude her Badger career in the women’s hammer throw on Thursday, June 6 at 5 p.m. CT. The Plymouth, Minnesota, native ranks second in school history in the event with a personal-best mark of 209-9 set earlier this season. Roberts is coming off of a first-team All-America showing in the weight throw at the 2024 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships and will make her NCAA outdoor championship debut next month.
