COLLEGE PARK, Md. – After five wins to open the season, the No. 8 Wisconsin men's soccer team (5-1-0) lost its first conference game, 3-0, to Maryland (3-1-3) Friday on the road.
How it happened
Both teams managed to generate opportunities with sustained pressure in the first 15 minutes. Maryland found a threatening opportunity on a corner kick in the 17th minute and capitalized to take a 1-0 lead over the Badgers that they'd take into the half.
The Terrapins kept their momentum early in the second half, scoring in the 47th and 53rd minutes to take a 3-0 lead over Wisconsin. The Badgers managed to generate several threatening opportunities in the remaining minutes of play.
Despite the sustained pressure, the Badgers didn't find the back of the net and opened conference play 0-1-0.
Notes to know
- Wisconsin allowed three goals Friday, more than the two goals the Badgers allowed in all first five games of the season.
- Friday is the first game the Badgers have been shut out this season, scoring at least one goal in each of their first five games.
- Wisconsin's five-game win streak that ended with Friday's loss was their best since 2021.
- Despite giving up three goals to Maryland, the Badgers' five goals allowed are still fifth-best in the NCAA for teams that have played six or more games.
