Redshirt freshman highlights successful meet in Illinois
MADISON, Wis. - Christian de Vaal was named the Big Ten Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Week and Big Ten Men's Cross Country Freshman of the Week after winning the Big Ten Preview last Friday in Champaign, Illinois.Â
de Vaal is the first men's athlete to earn the Athlete of the Week award in the 2024 season, as Jackson Sharp, Bob Liking and Joshua Truchon accounted for over half of the weekly conference awards on the men's side in 2023.
The redshirt freshman is also the first-ever member of Wisconsin's men's program to be named the Freshman of the Week in the Big Ten.
The race marked de Vaal's debut on the college stage, as the redshirt freshman ran his 8K in 23 minutes, 42.4 seconds to lead the way for Wisconsin.
The Howluck, New Zealand native was one of four runners who finished in the top-10 during the men's race, leading the Badgers to their second victory of the season with 24 points as a unit.Â
de Vaal and the men's team are back in action on Friday, Sept. 27, as Wisconsin hosts the annual Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational Presented by Under Armour. The first race is set to get underway at 11:00 a.m. CT from Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course.
