No. 17 men’s soccer set for kick-off against Viterbo
September 19, 2024 | Men's Soccer
The Badgers will fight to keep their undefeated home record on Saturday at 6 p.m.
MADISON, Wis. – The No. 17 Wisconsin men's soccer team (6-1-0) seeks to remain undefeated at home as they take on the Viterbo V-Hawks (1-3-0) Saturday at 6 p.m.
Here are five things to know about the game.
1 – BOLTZ SPARKS BADGERS — Freshman Dean Boltz scored the opening goal early against UCLA Monday for his eighth of the season, enough to lead the team in goals and points and tie him for second in the NCAA for goals. Boltz' Monday night goal sparked two Badgers — Trip Fleming and Thomas Raimbault — to follow with a goal and assist each. Fleming's 13 points are second to only Boltz' 19.
2 – BOUNCE BACK — Wisconsin entered Monday's matchup against UCLA after a 3-0 shutout defeat to Maryland. They quickly turned around the -3 goal differential against the Terrapins into a 4-1 win against a formidable opponent in the Bruins to post a +3 differential. Their goal differential of 14 on the season is tied for second-best in the NCAA.
3 – WHO'S HOUSE? — Wisconsin remains undefeated at home after five games. The Badgers allowed only three goals at home, enough for a 16-goal differential. Including Saturday's game, Wisconsin has five more regular season home games to play, meaning they've secured a record of at least .500 at home with plenty of soccer left to be played.
4 – DUST OFF THE RECORD BOOKS — Other than the best start to a season since 2001, Wisconsin is seeing standout performances early in the season. Boltz' eight goals are the best for any Badger in a season since 2017, where both Tom Barlow and Mike Catalano scored 10. Boltz' 19 points are also the most for a Wisconsin player since Chris Mueller notched 38 in 2017 — the same year the Badgers last won their most recent Big Ten Championship.
Wisconsin's 16-goal differential is their best through seven games since the 1993 season, where it was 17.
5 – A BIRD'S EYE VIEW OF THE V-HAWKS—This is the first time Wisconsin will kick off against Viterbo. The Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference V-Hawks are making the short trip from their home in La Crosse, Wisconsin. They are the Badgers' second regular-season in-state opponent: UW defeated Marquette earlier this season.
The V-Hawks are coming into the matchup after defeating Waldorf a staggering 12-0 with two hat tricks for their first victory this season.
EXTRA TIME — Kickoff is at 6 p.m. at McClimon Soccer Complex. Admission is free. The game will be broadcast on B1G+. Live stats will be available on the men's soccer schedule at UWBadgers.com. Live updates will be given @badgermsoccer on X (formerly twitter).
