MADISON, Wis. – A third-period goal from freshman Oliver Tulk helped the No. 17 Wisconsin men's hockey team tie the No. 20/19 Minnesota State in its home-opener on Thursday night at the Kohl Center, before winning the exhibition shootout.
Minnesota State (1-1-1) got on the board first, 12:59 into the second period. No one lit the lamp again until freshman forward Tulk tied the game for Wisconsin (2-0-1), 7:17 into the third frame. The game remained tied at one goal apiece throughout regulation and overtime, officially making the final score a 1-1 tie
In the shootout, freshman goaltender Daniel Hauser made four saves and freshman forward Bruno Idžan found the back of the net in the fourth round to give the Badgers the exhibition shootout win.
How it Happened
Despite having two power plays each, neither team scored in the first period.
Minnesota State broke the scoreless tie 12:59 into the second period after Luigi St. Benincasa lit the lamp.
Junior forward Quinn Finley hit the post midway through the second period, but UW wasn't able to convert on any scoring chances to get on the board.
Wisconsin evened the score 7:17 into the third frame after Oliver Tulk redirected home his first NCAA goal.
In the final 12 minutes of regulation, neither team scored as UW killed a late Maverick power play to send the game to overtime tied at one.
No one scored in the extra time, and the game officially ended as a 1-1 tie.
Idžan scored in the fourth round of the shootout to give Wisconsin the exhibition shootout victory. Hauser made four saves in the shootout and 21 throughout regulation and overtime to backstop the Badgers to a tie.
Wisconsin went 0-for-3 on the power play and 3-for-3 on the penalty kill. UW finished the contest with a 30-22 advantage in shots on goal.
