MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin men's basketball team played its annual Red-White intersquad scrimmage on Sunday at the Kohl Center. Team Red won 46-44, playing two 16-minute halves with a running clock.Â
The game provided those in attendance with their first look at this season's roster, which showcases six returners, five incoming transfers and four true freshmen.
STARTING LINEUPS:Â
White: Aleksas Bieliauskas, John Blackwell, Jack Janicki, Hayden Jones, Austin Rapp
Red: Nick Boyd, Braeden Carrington, Will Garlock, Andrew Rohde, Nolan Winter
The game was tightly contested throughout, with neither team leading by more than seven points. Transfer Nick Boyd got the contest going, driving over a big-man and finishing off glass for the first points.Â
Team White got off to a hot start with the dynamic duo of John Blackwell and Austin Rapp each having 7 points at the Under-5 media timeout. Transfer Andrew Rohde nailed a three as well.Â
For Red, true freshman Will Garlock had a nifty spin move in the post for his first bucket, while Tulsa transfer Braeden Carrington got on the board with a three-ball with the half winding down.Â
The half closed with White in a 23-22 lead, thanks to Rapp's driving and-one finish. Boyd cut Red's deficit to one at the buzzer off a stepback three.Â
The teams traded buckets out of the break, before White gained separation off a 9-0 run, punctuated by Issaac Gard and Jack Janicki threes.
Red instantly responded, thanks to Boyd's spark-plug ability down the stretch. He first gave red the lead with 90 seconds left on a crafty layup, before taking a charge on the following White possession. Boyd took the ball down right after, exploding into the lane and drawing the game-sealing free throws.Â
Boyd finished with a game-high 21 points on 5-of-9 shooting. He got to the charity stripe early and often, converting all 10 free throws. Nolan Winter cracked the double digits for Red, tallying 11 points and 4 rebounds. He came up big in the second-half with 9 points.
Team White saw a relatively balanced scoring, led by Rapp's 15 points and 5 rebounds. Blackwell was steady as always, dropping 13 points while posting 7 boards and 4 rebounds. The 6-foot-4 guard grabbed a game-high 3 offensive rebounds. True freshmen Aleksas Bielauskas finished his day with 6 points, dunking over Winter on one play, and Hayden Jones got two buckets as White's primary ballhandler.Â
From the Court
Head Coach Greg Gard:Â
"There are a lot of positive things, and now it's the last time we have to compete against each other in front of everybody else - the next time it's against another opponent. There's a lot to like with this group, but the thing that I like even more is there's a lot we've got to get better at, which is exciting because it puts the ceiling much higher."Â
