Senior Night Special: Wisconsin tops Penn State, 2-0

Eisa, Zachemski score in Badgers' Senior Night victory

MADISON, Wis. - The Wisconsin men's soccer team (6-7-0, 3-5-0 Big Ten) celebrated Senior Night in winning fashion on Saturday night. The Badgers beat the Penn State Nittany Lions (5-7-3, 1-5-2 Big Ten) 2-0 at McClimon Soccer Complex. Roman Eisa and Matthew Zachemski scored and Matisse Hébert posted a shutout to seal the victory.

How It Happened:

The Badgers struck first in the 27th minute when Roman Eisa sent senior Thomas Raimbault's centering pass into the back of the net.

Sophomore Matthew Zachemski doubled the Badgers lead with a goal in the 35th minute. Raimbault and Aidan Martinez earned assists.

Wisconsin scored on two-of-three shots on goal and limited Penn State to just one shot on goal to take the 2-0 lead into the half. The Badgers came out of the break strong, pouring in shot opportunities left and right throughout the second frame.

While Wisconsin maintained control for the majority of the second half, neither team found the back of the net. Hébert's three saves were enough for a shutout victory.

Straight From The Pitch:

Head coach Neil Jones:

"Very proud of our seniors and on our entire team tonight, a great home win on senior night and a shutout against a good Penn State team, and a difficult opponent like every team is in this fantastic conference. Really happy to see Roman Eisa on the score sheet again as well as Matthew Zachemski with another Big Ten goal, which is now three for him, and five on the season. Now we rest up and prepare for a top Michigan team on the road, and we look forward to that challenge and that match up. Really proud of our seniors who have given a lot to this program, and it was extra special to win for them and get a shut out tonight at McClimon where we love to play the most. On Wisconsin."

Key Notes:
  • The Wisconsin men's soccer team recognized its six seniors during a pregame ceremony.

  • Senior Thomas Raimbault had two assists on the night.

  • Matthew Zachemski scored his team-leading fifth goal of the season.

  • Hébert posted his third shutout of the season, making three saves.
