Battle of I-94: Wisconsin defeats Milwaukee, 2-1

Arntsen and Hrvojevic score in Badgers victory

MADISON, Wis. - The Wisconsin men's soccer team (4-5-0, 1-3-0 Big Ten) earned a 2-1 win over the Milwaukee Panthers (2-5-6, 1-0-3 Horizon) on Tuesday night. Arntsen and Hrvojevic each tallied a goal and assist in the first half en route to a Badgers victory at McClimon.

How It Happened:

The Badgers got on the board early with a perfectly executed corner kick in the 7th minute. Markie Hrvojevic played the ball to Isaac Brown Samper who set Ola Arntsen up beautifully. Arntsen rocketed a shot into the top right corner to give Wisconsin the lead.

Wisconsin doubled its lead in the 19th minute with a goal from Markie Hrvojevic. Arntsen's crossing pass gave Hrvojevic a clean head shot into the net.

Wisconsin took a 2-0 lead into the break, outshooting the Panthers 4-1 in the first frame.

The Panthers got on the board in the 57th minute with a breakaway goal from Jack Bretzmann, assisted by goalkeeper Nic Diana.

Wisconsin only recorded one shot in the second half, but stayed strong defensively to secure the 2-1 victory.

Straight From The Pitch:

Head coach Neil Jones:

"Very happy with the win against a difficult opponent [Milwaukee] tonight in a Wisconsin Derby match, which is always difficult to navigate, especially midweek, and in between very difficult conference games on the road.

"Happy to score two goals and get back to winning ways at home and I thought there were some quality performances tonight. Markie Hrvojevic with a great goal and a good performance throughout the game and our midfield group played well as well as our center backs being strong and learning from previous moments and games where we have worked on those moments and training to make it more difficult for teams to score on us.

"Now we rest up and prepare for Rutgers away on Friday and we're looking forward to that match against a top-notch side that is one of the top teams in the country right now."

Key Notes:

  • Matisse Hébert played in net after earning Big Ten Goalkeeper of the week honors following his shutout performance last Friday against Ohio State.

  • Arntsen recorded his first collegiate three point game (1 goal, 1 assist).

  • Brown Samper earned his first collegiate point with an assist on Arntsen's goal.
