Five Badgers score double-digits
MADISON, Wis – Wisconsin men's basketball junior Nolan Winter notched his fifth-career double-double as No. 24 UW ousted Ball State 86-55 on Tuesday at the Kohl Center.Â
The Lakeville, Minnesota native finished with a game-high 19 points and 10 rebounds, cashing in on 7-of-11 shots from the field. Winter hit two three-pointers, and dished out two assists, as well.
Five players reached double-digits for the Badgers (3-0) on Tuesday, including graduate student Nick Boyd. The SDSU transfer finished his night with 12 points after setting a career high of 25 against Northern Illinois last Friday night. Tulsa transfer Braeden Carrington added 12 points, shooting 4-of-6 from the field in 17 minutes off the bench. Austin Rapp had 11 points, while Andrew Rohde chipped in 10 on an efficient 4-of-7 shooting-clip.Â
Wisconsin got out to another fast start, outscoring the Cardinals (2-1) 25-6 in the game's first eight minutes. Bucky took a 39-26 lead into the break. Winter led the way with 11 points and 7 boards.
The offense exploded for 47 second-half points, while shooting 7-of-15 from deep in the period. They finished 14-for-38 from behind the arc.Â
The Badgers dominated the interior Monday, outrebounding the Cardinals 45-25. They consistently got looks in the paint, and finished with a 34-20 advantage on the inside. The defense was also strong throughout, holding Ball State to just 18 field goals, and forcing 14 turnovers.Â
From the Court
Head Coach Greg Gard
"Everybody wants to score and have the headlines and those things but the first priority has to be to have a successful team and an improving team… I know I've got team oriented guys and they want to play for what's on the front of the jersey and play for each other. I thinks that's where you find the enjoyment and the joy in how you play and hoe goof we can be collectively."
Junior Nolan Winter
On his double-double:
"It's huge for me, personally. I'm trying to get as many rebounds as I can for this team. As a 7-footer, I know that's my job. Having the mentality of every ball is mine when it's shot, that's my thing this year, and what I'll carry on for the whole season. It's [about] doing whatever this team needs to win, and we've done a pretty good job of winning so far, so it's [now] about keeping that going."
Senior Braeden CarringtonÂ
On the team's opening run:
"The first 10 minutes the ball was moving, people were shooting with confidence, making that extra pass to get a good shot for a great shot. That's when our offense is at at its best;Â when we're playing unselfish, playing confident and moving the ball. It's on us to have that [success] carry over for the full game, but yeah, there's a lot of firepower there."
