Hoosiers pull away in second half to claim 31-7 win
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. βΒ The Wisconsin football team fell to No. 2 Indiana, 31-7, on Saturday in Bloomington, Indiana.Β
ΒWith true freshman quarterback Carter Smith making his first career start, Wisconsin (3-7, 1-6 Big Ten) hung around until Indiana's (11-0, 8-0 Big Ten) high-powered offense mustered 21-second half points to secure the 24-point win.
ΒWisconsin opened the game by assembling a 13-play, 48-yard drive that lasted 7:39. In his first career start, quarterback Carter Smith completed his first pass attempt for a 19-yard gain. After an 8-yard completion to Vinny Anthony II on third-and-long in Indiana territory, Wisconsin missed a field goal and the game stayed scoreless.
ΒIndiana responded with a 31-yard touchdown pass on the ensuing drive to open the scoring.
ΒThe Badgers evened the score on a 45-yard touchdown pass from Carter Smith to Lance Mason on a 4th-and-1 play with 3:42 remaining in the first half. With the Badgers in a heavy personnel package, Mason broke behind the defense and caught an easy toss from Smith and cruised in for six.
ΒIndiana regained the lead on a 37-yard field goal with just under a minute left in the half, making the score 10-7 going into the break.
ΒThe Hoosiers scored twice in the third quarter to take a 24-7 lead. In the fourth quarter they added a touchdown to make the score 31-7.
ΒSmith, who became the first UW true freshman to start a game since 1991, was 9-for-15 for 98 yards and a touchdown.Β
ΒDarryl Peterson III had a career day for UW with 2.5 sacks as UW recorded five sacks, marking the third-straight game UW has had four or more sacks.Β
ΒFreshmen Mason Posa and Cooper Catalano were impressive once again as they each added a sack, while Posa led the team in total tackles with 12.
