UW swings .458 to split weekend action
COLUMBUS, Ohio - The No. 11 Wisconsin volleyball team bounced back in an emphatic fashion, sweeping Ohio State (25-14, 25-12, 25-14) to earn it's ninth conference win and split the weekend.
The Badgers (16-4, 9-3) burst out of the gates in set one, led by outside hitter Mimi Colyer, who notched eight kills on eight attempts to begin the match.
UW provided a 7-0 run behind the service of setter Addy Horner, as she racked up a kill in that time period to help build a 15-5 advantage. The Badgers then cruised to a set one win, concluded by a quality swing from outside hitter Una Vajagic.
In set two, Wisconsin strung together another run to create separation, jumping out to a 12-4 lead after winning six consecutive rallies.
The Badgers accumulated four service aces in set two, finishing the match with seven in comparison to the Buckeyes' (3-17, 0-12) one. Wisconsin's seven service aces is their second-highest mark in their 11 conference matches.
Middle blocker Carter Booth finished off set two with a kill of her own to wrap up a 25-12 victory. Booth ended her afternoon with a hitting percentage of .500 (8 - 1 - 14).
Set three was more of the same for Wisconsin, as the Badgers once again used a 6-0 run in the middle to pull away from Ohio State. Colyer tallied three more kills during that span, terminating 17 on the day to lead UW. The senior has now finished with double-digit kills in 18 of the Badgers' 19 matches.
Sophomore Tosia Serafinowska earned a block during the latter half of set three, marking the first of her collegiate career.
Wisconsin went on to close it out, not allowing the Buckeyes to score over 15 points during the entirety of the match. The Badgers held Ohio State to a .078 swinging percentage, the sixth time that UW has held their opponent to under .100 this season. Libero Kristen Simon continued to help in that department, as she provided 10 digs for her 11th-straight match with double-digit totals.
In her return to the Covelli Center, right side Grace Egan tied her career-high in hitting percentage at .667 (7 - 1 - 9), ending her weekend with 16 kills and only two attack errors in a pair of matches. Egan also contributed three service aces in Sunday's battle.
With the help of Egan and others, the Badgers put together their strongest offensive showing of the year by hitting .458 (44 - 6 - 83).
Straight from the Court
Head Coach Kelly Sheffield (on excelling defensively): "Our backcourt was flying around without hesitation. It starts with that, I think sometimes when you're overthinking you can start hesitating or your bouncing around and you're not in a balanced position. We're trying to establish new habits for some of us in the backcourt…We just made some really great effort plays today."
Outside Hitter Grace Egan (on bouncing back from Friday's match): "Just get back to work. I mean, it wasn't how we expected it, but we turned around really fast and we said that we're going to focus up, and come in really strong. I think that's what we did."
