SAN DIEGO – As part of their west coast trip to San Diego, The Wisconsin men's basketball team took part in a community service project to help those in need during Thanksgiving Tuesday by sorting produce and organizing food boxes to hand out in the community.
The players, coaches and staff visited the Feeding San Diego Organization on Tuesday, sorting and assembling boxes of food, including 5,412 pounds of apples (and pears) for 1,891 households in San Diego County. The team packaged 2,000 pounds of dried goods, overall.Â
"This is at the top of the list when it comes to being a college athlete," guard Nick Boyd said. "Having this spotlight, and being able to use it the right way is key– Especially during Thanksgiving week, as we're here in San Diego, to be able to impact a community that has given us great hospitality. I played here last year, and it means a lot to give back to this place. I have great memories here, it's a beautiful area, and a beautiful city, so this is the least that I could do."Â
Feeding San Diego coordinates volunteers to package up the goods, and distributes it across various partner agencies who have outreach in the community. Their mission is to connect every person facing hunger with nutritious meals by maximizing food rescue.Â
"It's always important to help people that are less fortunate, and a good opportunity to realize how fortunate we are - and how we can use that to impact others," junior Jack Janicki said. "This time of year really makes you reflect on what you're grateful for, being able to help someone with their Thanksgiving meal means the world to me, knowing how I value a Thanksgiving meal with my family, so this is a big deal for us."

"It's so important to have such a big group this time of year," Feeding San Diego volunteer coordinator Natalie Puntman said. "We're able to split them up across several different projects, so we're able to provide so much more across the community when we get such a big and committed group like this."
