Wisconsin scores program record 17 goals
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The No.1 Wisconsin women's hockey team claimed the Guitar Trophy in the SMASHVILLE Women's Collegiate Hockey Showcase in Nashville after a record-breaking 17-2 victory over Stonehill on Sunday. UW's 17 goals in the victory are a new program-best.
The 17 goals in the game came from 11 different Badgers, with Seniors Kirsten Simms and McKayla Zilish each recording hat tricks. They were joined by Cassie Hall and Kelly Gorbatenko with multi-goal games.Â
McCarthy was followed by a trio of Badgers scoring a minute apart. Kirsten Simms, Claire Enright and Lacey Eden all found the back of the net in the first. Eden's goal in the first period was her 200th career point, becoming the ninth Badger to accomplish that feat after Simms had done so earlier this season.
The bulk of the Badgers scoring came from a nine-goal period two - the most goals in a single period in program history. It was during this time when Zilisch scored a hat trick, becoming just the fifth Badger ever to record a hat trick in a single period and the first since Brooke Ammerman in 2011. Zilisch's first goal of her hat trick was also her first since transferring to the Badgers last season.
Zilisch was joined by Simms, Laila Edwards, Cassie Hall, Laney Potter and Kelly Gorbatenko as goal scorers in the period, ending the period with a 13-1 Badger lead.
Gorbatenko didn't stop there, opening the third with another goal. Goals from Adéla Šapovalivová and Maggie Scannell, as well as a short-hander for Hall's second goal of the game, rounded out the Badgers score, ending in a dominant 17-2 victory.
Wisconsin outshot Mercyhurst 87-20, the most shots on goal the team has ever put up.
Freshman Rhyah Stewart made her first career start in net for the Badgers, saving 13 shots.
