Junior earns first career player of the week honor
MADISON, Wis. – After scoring 56 points and leading UW to a pair of victories, Wisconsin men's basketball junior John Blackwell has been named Big Ten Player of the Week, the conference announced on Monday.Â
It marks Blackwell's first Big Ten Player of the Week award after the Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, native earned four Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors during his rookie campaign.Â
Blackwell averaged 28.0 points per game and 6.0 rebounds while leading UW to home victories over Northwestern and Marquette. His 28.0 points per game average led all Big Ten players who appeared in multiple games during the week.Â
The guard recorded his first double-double of the season on Wednesday vs. the Wildcats thanks to a 26-point, 11 rebound performance. His 11 rebounds vs. Northwestern matched a career high.Â
On Saturday, Blackwell posted 30 points in a 96-76 win over the Golden Eagles, which marked his Big Ten leading third 30-point game of the season.Â
In addition to leading the conference in points last week, his 11 three pointers also led all players.Â
Blackwell and the Badgers resume Big Ten play on Wednesday with a trip to Nebraska. Tip is set for 8 p.m. and the game will air live on BTN.Â
