Trio of Badgers win WCHA weekly awards

McNaughton, Jungels, O’Brien recognized for helping UW to border battle sweep

MADISON, Wis. – Casey O'Brien, Vivian Jungels and Ava McNaughton all earned WCHA Player of the Week honors after leading the No. 1 Wisconsin women's hockey team to a sweep of Minnesota last weekend, the league announced on Monday. 

O'Brien earned her third WCHA Forward of the Week honor, Jungels picked up her first WCHA Defender of the Week accolade while McNaughton took home her fourth WCHA Goaltender of the Week award. 
 
O'Brien put together a seven-point weekend in the border battle sweep. The Wisconsin captain had 2 goals and an assist in UW's 8-2 win on Saturday. The senior added a shorthanded goal and three assists in UW's 6-1 win on Sunday. The Milton, Massachusetts, native became the second Badger to post 250 career points. The forward's seven points and +8 plus/minus rating were league bests and her three goals were also tied for the most in the WCHA. O'Brien's 26 faceoff wins ranked third in the league O'Brien leads the nation with 66 points in her 32 games played this season. She also holds the national title for assists with 45 assists so far this season.

Jungels scored two goals and added an assist in UW's sweep of Minnesota this past weekend. The blueliner scored in each game against the Golden Gophers. The junior blocked nine shots game two of the series against Minnesota to help the Badgers to their first regular-season sweep for the first time since the 2017-18 season. The Edina, Minnesota, native's 11 blocked shots on the weekend led all WCHA players. Jungels three points were tied for the most by a WCHA defender
 
McNaughton recorded her 27th and 28th wins this past weekend in just 31 games played this season. The Seven Fields, Pennsylvania, native ranked second in the league last week in save percentage among WCHA goaltenders who played both games this past weekend. The Wisconsin goaltender leads the country in wins and goals against average. She ranks second in save percentage and is tied for third with seven shutouts.

O'Brien, Jungels, McNaughton and the Badgers will take a week off before closing out the regular season against Bemidji State on the road. Puck drop is set for 3 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 21, and 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 22.
