Badgers split day two of FGCU Invitational

Wisconsin beats Seton Hall, falls against FGCU

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Wisconsin softball team (5-4) split its pair of games in the FGCU invitational this Saturday. The Badgers powered their way to a 7-2 victory over Seton Hall in their first game of the day, before losing to Florida Gulf Coast, 2-1 later on.

GAME ONE

Everything clicked for the Badgers in their first game against Seton Hall, putting up their best offensive output of the season so far.

Four Badgers put up multi-hit games, totaling up to seven runs scored on 12 hits - both season highs for Wisconsin.

UW's lead began quickly, with Molly Schlosser first singling in Makenzie Foster, before stealing her way around the bases and scoring herself. The Badgers were up, 2-0 after the top of the first.

After trading scores in the fourth inning, Hilary Blomberg hit the first of two extra-base hits on the day, smacking a double to score Schlosser in the top of the fifth. Blomberg later struck in the seventh inning, with a two-RBI triple.

Danielle Lucey added to those two runs in the seventh with an RBI hit of her own, bringing Blomberg home three batters later.

Molly Jacobson backed up the Badger offense with a brilliant day on the mound, going 6.0 innings while giving up just three hits and one earned run.

The first run Jacobson gave up on the day was in the fourth inning, when an error allowed a Seton Hall base runner to score from second. The second run came off a single in the sixth inning - Jacobson allowed no extra-base hits for the day.

Freshman Kendra Lewis pitched a clean seventh inning for Wisconsin, closing things out with two ground outs and a strikeout.

Batting Cleanup
  • The Badgers finished with their highest hit total on the season so far (12) and their most since defeating Penn State last season in April (13).
  • In 22.1 innings pitched, Molly Jacobson has a 2.82 ERA, a 1.07 WHIP, and 13 strikeouts.
  • Mackenzie Foster and Dani Lucey both had their first career multi-hit games for the Badgers, with Foster going 2-for-4 with a double, and Lucey going 3-for-4 with and RBI.
  • Hilary Blomberg went 2-for-4 with a double, a triple and three RBI. It's her second career game with multiple extra base hits and her first career triple.
  • Molly Schlosser and Emmy Wells each went 2-for-3 in the game with an RBI. Additionally, Schlosser scored three runs in the game on two stolen bases.

GAME TWO

Wisconsin's next game of the day came against Florida Gulf Coast, where the team lost, 2-1.

What looked to be another high-scoring game quickly became a pitcher's duel. Molly Schlosser started things off in the top of the first with her first home run of the season - a solo shot.

Florida Gulf Coast earned two runs back in the bottom or the second, however. A successful bunt moved runners to second and third with one out, allowing a fielder's choice and a double steal to bring home both runs.

Wisconsin had two big chances to offer more run support in the game. The Badgers led off the top of the fourth inning with two singles and a walk, but were unable to bring home any of the runners in the inning, recording three consecutive outs.

The Badgers once again loaded the bases in the sixth inning, but FGCU forced a pop out to get out of the jam.

Salo took the loss on the day, with her record now sitting at 3-2. She went 6.0 innings, allowing seven hits, two earned runs, and striking out two batters.

Batting Cleanup
  • Brooke Kuffel had a perfect game at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a walk in all three of her plate appearances.
  • Molly Schlosser's home run was the fourth of the senior's career and her first of the season. Schlosser's eight hits on the season have already passed her previous total of five from last season.
  • The Badger's struck out just twice in both games on the day, and now have three consecutive games with two or less strikeouts. The team last accomplished this feat last season in a three game stretch from 2/9/24 to 2/10/24.
