John Tonje earned Naismith Player of the Week and Big Ten Player of the Week honors after leading the No. 11 BadgersĀ to a road win over No. 7 Purdue on Saturday.Ā
Tonje earned his first Naismith Player of the Week honor and is the first Badger to receive the award since Johnny Davis during the 2021-22 season. This also marks the third time that the North Omaha, Nebraska, native has been named the Big Ten Player of the Week. He is now tied with Purdue's Trey Kaufman-Renn for the most Big Ten Player of the Week honors this season.
The wingĀ scored 32 points at Purdue's Mackey Arena, guiding the Badgers to a 94-84 victory. He went 10-for-15 from the field, adding in six rebounds, and three assists in the all-around performance. His 32 points were the most of any player in the nation in a top-10 road win this year.Ā
This marks the second time Tonje has scored 30+ points in a top-10 win as he posted 41 points in a home win against No. 9 Arizona in November and made a program record 21 free throws.Ā
In seven games since January 21, Tonje is averaging 24.6 points and 5.0 rebounds per game on 53.5% shooting from the field with a 48.3% clip from 3-point range. His points per game total is second in the nation in that span.
Tonje leads Wisconsin with 19.2 points per game, ranking fifth in the conference. Among all Big Ten players averaging at least 19.0 points per game, he has the highest 3-point percentage, free-throw percentage, and is on the team with the best overall record.
The No. 11 Badgers open a three-game homestand against Illinois on Tuesday night at the Kohl Center. Tip is set for 7:30 p.m. and tickets are still available on UWBadgers.com.Ā
