Badgers sweep Saturday slate in Illinois

Timely hits, strong pitching outings leads to pair of victories for UW

CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Wisconsin softball team (15-7) tallied two victories in its first day of action at the Saluki Invitational—defeating both Northern Illinois and Southern Illinois to kick off the weekend.

GAME ONE

The Badgers got off to a quick start in game one against Northern Illinois, plating three runs in the first frame to get out to an early lead. Brooke Kuffel and Kendra Lewis each tallied RBI base hits for UW, including a double from Kuffel.

After four unanswered runs from the Huskies, Alivia Bark got things started in the fifth inning with a double down the left field line. After a sacrifice bunt turned in by Molly Schlosser, Hilary Blomberg hit a sacrifice fly to the outfield to knot it up at 4-4.

Wisconsin continued to add on in the sixth inning, as Ellie Hubbard provided an RBI single to the opposite field to drive in Dani Lucey—giving the Badgers a 6-4 lead.

Shelby Jacobson (2-0) slammed the door down the stretch for Wisconsin in the circle, as the Chicago native held the Huskies scoreless over the last 3.1 innings of play to notch her second victory of the season. The right-hander only allowed one hit to earn the 6-4 win for the Badgers.

Batting Cleanup

  • Alivia Bark reached base multiple times from the leadoff spot, finishing 1-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI. She extended her hitting streak to 10 games.
  • Shelby Jacobson's 3.1 shutout frame lowered her ERA to 0.54 over 13 innings of work, allowing one earned run this season.
  • Emmy Wells finished with a 1-for-2 performance, driving in a run in the process.

GAME TWO

In game two, Emily Bojan put Wisconsin out in front with a solo shot to left-center field in the top of the second inning.

Later on, Makenzie Foster created momentum in the fifth frame with an infield hit. A bunt from Rylie Crane, followed by a passed ball allowed the sophomore to get to third base with only one out.

Bark executed a sacrifice bunt to plate Foster, putting the Badgers up 2-0.

Gabi Salo (7-3) escaped a jam in the sixth inning, forcing a pop up on the infield with runners on first and third to get out of the frame with a one-run lead. The graduate student accumulated seven strikeouts in her fourth complete game of the season, only allowing one walk to the Salukis.

Wisconsin finished the day with two wins, as they have emerged victorious in six of their last seven games dating back to last weekend at the Chanticleer Showdown.

Batting Cleanup

  • Makenzie Foster tallied a hit in both matchups on Saturday, finishing the day with a 2-for-2 line while scoring twice.
