MADISON, Wis. - The Wisconsin softball team (30-16, 10-8) clinched its series against Minnesota with a 6-4 game two victory this Sunday.
A couple of swings ended up being the difference, with a home run from
Emily Bojan and a triple from Dani Lucey making up five of Wisconsin's six runs.
The Badgers got off to an early lead, putting across three runs in the bottom of the first.
Kendra Lewis started things off with an RBI groundout that scored a runner on third. With another runner on base,
Emily Bojan came up to the plate and roped a pitch over the left field wall, making it 3-0.
Both teams were stifled at the plate from there, with each pitcher putting up zeros for the next two innings. Wisconsin's starter,
Gabi Salo, rode a no-hitter into the fourth inning, but Minnesota broke up the bid with a big two-run home run to cut the deficit to one.
Wisconsin wouldn't get insurance until the bottom of the sixth inning. With the bases loaded, Dani Lucey popped up a ball that no Gopher could reach with the wind, taking a wicked bounce towards the dugout. All three base runners scored on the play, as Lucey made it to third on a triple.
Facing a 6-2 deficit in the top of the seventh, Minnesota fought back to shrink the lead. With
Molly Jacobson in relief for Salo, the Gophers capitalized on some wild pitches and singles to make it a 6-4 ball game. Salo returned in the game to record the final two outs and seal the Badger's victory.
Salo collected the win, improving her record to 13-8. She went 6.0 innings, allowing just two earned runs, and striking out four batters.
